Kimi Antonelli Wins 2026 F1 Title: Youngest Champion Ever, Mexico City GP Recap and What’s Next

Kimi Antonelli clinched the 2026 Formula 1 title with third place at the Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the youngest champion ever at 20. Here’s how he did it, the records he broke, the standings and the four races left.

Kimi Antonelli is the 2026 Formula 1 World Champion. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver clinched the title on Sunday, Nov. 1, by finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix, making him the youngest champion in F1 history at 20 years and 68 days old. Max Verstappen won the race for Red Bull, with Lewis Hamilton second for Ferrari, and four races are still left on the calendar.

Here’s how the title was decided, the records Antonelli broke, what the standings look like now, and what’s still to race for before the season ends in Abu Dhabi on Dec. 6.

How Antonelli Clinched the Title in Mexico City

Antonelli arrived at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez needing only to finish ninth or better to wrap up the championship, no matter where Hamilton or his Mercedes teammate George Russell finished, according to Formula1.com’s race report. It still wasn’t a simple afternoon.

He started fourth and ran a long first stint on soft tyres, stretching them beyond 40 laps, which Mercedes says put him in contention for a podium. He even led the race for a spell while the cars ahead pitted. Then, shortly after his own stop on Lap 43, Valtteri Bottas crashed heavily at Turn 1 when his Cadillac’s front-left suspension failed under braking. The Safety Car became a red flag because of barrier damage. Bottas got out of the car unaided and was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks.

The stoppage wiped out the tyre advantage Antonelli had built, and he restarted fourth. On the second lap after the standing restart, he dived inside Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari at Turn 1 to take third, and he held that position through a late Safety Car to the flag, finishing about four seconds behind the winner.

Verstappen Wins, Hamilton Second

Up front, Verstappen took his third win of the season from fifth on the grid. Polesitter Hamilton and Leclerc went side by side through the opening corners and both ran off track; Leclerc took the lead but was later handed a five-second penalty, and Verstappen slipped past Hamilton in the confusion. Over the radio, Hamilton said “the stewards are basically handing Charles this win,” per Formula1.com, before the penalty and pit stops shuffled the order.

Verstappen then held off Hamilton at both restarts and won by 0.799 seconds. Leclerc finished fourth ahead of Lando Norris, with Russell sixth after an energy deployment problem at the start and a 10-second penalty for tipping Isack Hadjar into a spin.

The Records Antonelli Broke

The headline record is age. According to Mercedes’ race report, Antonelli became champion at 20 years and 68 days, beating the mark Sebastian Vettel set in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. That’s a margin of more than three years, which is huge for a record that had stood for 16 seasons.

He also made history for Italy and for his team:

  • First Italian champion in 73 years. No Italian had won the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
  • Only the third Italian champion ever, after Giuseppe Farina and Ascari.
  • First Mercedes junior to win the title. Antonelli is the first graduate of the team’s young driver programme to become champion.
  • Mercedes’ 10th drivers’ title, adding to championships in 1954, 1955 and every year from 2014 to 2020.

He did it in only his second F1 season, a point Mercedes stressed in its race report, noting that some people had questioned last year whether he was ready for a Mercedes seat. According to The Hindu’s race report, he has won nine Grands Prix this year.

He Raced Through Illness

The weekend was harder than the “just finish ninth” math suggested. F1’s Monday Morning Debrief reports that Antonelli picked up a viral illness in the days after his win in Austin. He was excused from his usual Thursday media duties in Mexico and kept a low profile while he tried to recover, though he still drove in both Friday practice sessions.

What Antonelli Said

“We did it. And, you know, without them, I wouldn’t be here. Without Mercedes, without my family,” Antonelli said after the race, as quoted by Formula1.com. “So I’m very grateful for this moment, and it’s one that will live forever. And I just, I’m speechless. I’m trying to process what has just happened.”

In Mercedes’ statement, he said he felt “more tension coming into this weekend, knowing what was possible,” and that sharing the podium with Verstappen and Hamilton “was really cool.” He also made clear the job isn’t finished: “We still have races to go and we want to finish the season strongly by clinching the Constructors’ Championship.”

Verstappen, who helped Hamilton lift Antonelli up after the race, was generous in defeat. “It is incredible, what a season (Antonelli) has had, and to do this at such an age … I’m sure this is a very emotional day for him, and I am very proud of him,” he said, per The Hindu.

2026 F1 Standings After Mexico

With the drivers’ title settled, the fight is now for second place and for the constructors’ crown. Based on the figures reported by The Hindu after the race:

  • Kimi Antonelli – 380 points (champion)
  • Max Verstappen – 261 points
  • Lewis Hamilton – 259 points

Verstappen edged past Hamilton for second with his win, so expect that two-point gap to be one of the main storylines over the final four rounds. In the constructors’ championship, Mercedes has 630 points and leads Ferrari by 126, so the Silver Arrows can make it a double soon.

Remaining 2026 F1 Races

The season doesn’t stop for the celebration. The paddock heads straight to Brazil this weekend. Here’s what’s left, according to the official 2026 F1 calendar:

  • São Paulo Grand Prix – Nov. 6 to 8, Interlagos
  • Las Vegas Grand Prix – Nov. 19 to 21, Las Vegas Street Circuit
  • Qatar Grand Prix – Nov. 27 to 29, Lusail
  • Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – Dec. 4 to 6, Yas Marina (season finale)

In the U.S., races in 2026 stream on Apple TV, according to ESPN’s F1 schedule. If you’re working out which streaming services you actually need this fall, our guide to how to watch the 2026-27 NBA season covers a lot of the same apps.

Why This Title Matters Beyond F1

It’s been a big week for young stars and first-time champions. The Golden State Valkyries won the WNBA title in only their second season, and the Ballon d’Or 2026 winners were crowned last week. Antonelli’s title fits that theme: a driver many doubted 12 months ago has now rewritten one of the sport’s most famous records.

For casual fans, it’s also a good moment to jump in. The pressure is off at the top of the table, the battle for second between Verstappen and Hamilton is as close as it gets, and the newest champion has four more races to show why he got there first.
