If the inner screen on your new iPhone Duo cracked or started showing bright lines near the hinge, you’re not alone, and you shouldn’t have to pay for it. On Oct. 26, 2026, Apple said it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units” and told affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Here’s what’s going on, what the early teardowns suggest, and exactly what to do if your $1,999 foldable is affected.

What’s happening with iPhone Duo screens?

Apple’s first foldable phone hit store shelves on Friday, Oct. 23, and within days owners began posting photos of broken inner displays. According to CNBC, the damage typically shows up as horizontal bright lines running out from the phone’s hinge. The Verge reports that many owners describe the hinge tightening, then a crack forming as they open the phone, with a distinctive bright line running from the center toward the right side of the screen.

Several owners say they heard a crunching sound or felt unusual resistance while folding or unfolding the phone, pushed past it, and then saw the lines appear. Some say their screens failed within hours, and one Reddit poster said the display broke before setup was even finished, according to The Next Web.

A word of caution: CNBC notes that most reports come from anonymous users on Reddit and X, and that some fake images are circulating. Still, Apple’s own statement confirms the problem is real for at least some units.

What Apple has said

Here is the core of Apple’s statement, as shared with The Verge, CNBC and other outlets:

“We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”

Apple also said that most units aren’t susceptible and that the problem tends to appear quickly on phones that have the defect. The company has not said what causes it or how many phones are affected. For context on the device itself, see our full rundown of the iPhone Duo’s price, specs and battery life.

Why are the screens cracking? What iFixit found

Repair specialist iFixit tore down an iPhone Duo over the weekend. It hasn’t reached a final verdict, but its findings point at the hinge.

A possible stress point in the hinge

To fold the screen smoothly and hide the crease, the Duo uses curved guides and a center support bar that drops down as the phone closes, so the display can bend in a “waterdrop” shape. iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge from teardown footage, patents and CT scans and compared it with where owners’ damage appears. As MacRumors summarized, the breaks cluster near a spot where the hinge changes shape, close to where a flex cable crosses and several edges meet. In one simulation, the center bar didn’t drop far enough, creating a stress point under the folding screen.

iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens put it this way on X: “The hinge is actually dozens of parts, with ludicrous precision. A manufacturing variance or grain of sand can kill the fragile display panel it protects.”

Dust can still reach the hinge

The Duo carries an IP68 rating, but iFixit’s fluorescent-powder test showed that fine particles can still reach the hinge’s moving parts and make it crunch. The Duo collected less powder than the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold in the same test, but iFixit still suggests it’s not a great phone to take to the beach. iFixit also said the display failures could come from pressure, a trapped particle, repeated bending, a manufacturing defect or even a wiring problem, so treat any single explanation as a theory for now.

What to do if your iPhone Duo screen cracked

  1. Stop folding it if the hinge feels tight or crunchy. Owners report the damage appearing after they pushed past resistance. If something feels wrong, don’t force it.
  2. Back up your phone. Run an iCloud or computer backup before handing it over, since a replacement means a new device.
  3. Document the damage. Take clear photos or a short video of the lines, the crack and any hinge noise, and note when it started.
  4. Contact AppleCare. This is Apple’s own instruction. You can start through Apple’s iPhone screen repair page, the Apple Support app, or by booking an Apple Store visit. Bring your proof of purchase.
  5. Know your return window. If you bought directly from Apple, its standard U.S. return policy gives you 14 calendar days from the date you received the item. Phones bought through a carrier or another retailer follow that seller’s policy.

One owner in Australia said an Apple Store replaced their unit on the spot, according to The Verge, though your experience may vary with stock levels.

Is it covered under warranty?

Apple’s one-year limited warranty covers manufacturing issues but not accidental damage, according to Apple Support. Apple has told affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement, which is a strong signal it’s treating this as a defect rather than user damage. Apple also notes its warranty sits on top of any rights you have under consumer law where you live.

The stakes are high if you end up outside that coverage: Apple lists an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair for the Duo at $999, about half the phone’s $1,999 starting price, according to CNBC and The Next Web. That’s one reason iFixit says many buyers are choosing AppleCare+ for the Duo. Should you still buy an iPhone Duo?

Early reviewers praised the unfolded experience for multitasking and media, according to CNBC, and iFixit gave the Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability, its highest score yet for a foldable. But the inner display and hinge are the hardest and most expensive parts to fix, and cracking screens have dogged foldables since Samsung’s first model in 2019.

If you’re on the fence, it’s reasonable to wait a few weeks to see whether Apple identifies the cause or changes production. If you buy now, buy directly from Apple or a seller with a clear return policy, check the hinge carefully in the first days, and consider extended coverage. FAQ

How many iPhone Duos are affected?

Apple hasn’t given a number. It says only that a “small number” of units are affected and that most aren’t susceptible.

Will Apple replace my cracked iPhone Duo for free?

Apple says affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple hasn’t published a formal repair program, so confirm the terms with AppleCare when you call or visit.

How much does an iPhone Duo inner screen repair cost?

Apple lists $999 for an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair, according to CNBC.

Can I prevent the crack?

There’s no confirmed fix. Ars Technica notes that if a hinge part is the culprit, affected units may fail regardless of care. Sensible steps are keeping the hinge away from sand and dust and not forcing the phone open or closed if it feels stiff.

What does the damage look like?

Owners report bright horizontal lines spreading from the hinge, often toward the right side of the inner screen, sometimes with a visible crack along the crease.
